Fun Fourth Festivities

Despite a heat index of almost 100 degrees, people turned out in droves for the Fun Fourth Festival in downtown Greensboro. Fortunately, the Magic Art Bus “Founding Mother” Elizabeth Ramsey fashioned an awning that extended from the bus and kept everyone shaded for several hours of arts-making fun.

The project of the day was mini-American flags. Kids expressed their patriotic spirit using Popsicle sticks and paper, and in the end, about 376 flags were created on the bus!

Summer Solstice a Huge Success

The Magic Art Bus is taking a breather after taking part in two big events: the Greensboro Summer Solstice and the Fun Fourth Festival.

Solstice was great! The air was redolent with incense, people floated by dressed as fairies, and we had over 100 visitors who crafted puppets for our Magic Puppet Theater. Many thanks to Brown Biggers for building the theater structure, Molly Brady for donating supplies and Steve Greene for being our trusty photographer.

Arts = Health, Hope & Happiness!

The gallery was packed for the May 3rd for the Guilford County Commissioner’s budget meeting. The County Manager’s original budget includes $0 support for the arts.

A compelling array of speakers argued that arts and cultural offerings make profound, lasting, life-long changes for the children who participate.

A librarian, two young men who said that creating poetry helped them stay out of gangs,  a woman who volunteers in the Glenwood Library teaching ESL to women from 15 nations, a music educator, a representative from the Magic Art Bus, and a woman who said that having her son participate in Art Quest changed both of their lives appeared to make an impact on the commissioners.

Let’s hope that these testimonials have an effect on the county budget and its support of the United Arts Council.

El día & Elmo!

The Magic Art Bus appearance at the El día de los niños/El día de los libros event in Greensboro was a huge success! We made amazing Chilean tooled foil pendants and saw over 100 kids. Elmo made a special guest appearance and gave Magic Art Bus founder Elizabeth Ramsey a well-deserved hug for all of her hard work.
