The gallery was packed for the May 3rd for the Guilford County Commissioner’s budget meeting. The County Manager’s original budget includes $0 support for the arts.
A compelling array of speakers argued that arts and cultural offerings make profound, lasting, life-long changes for the children who participate.
A librarian, two young men who said that creating poetry helped them stay out of gangs, a woman who volunteers in the Glenwood Library teaching ESL to women from 15 nations, a music educator, a representative from the Magic Art Bus, and a woman who said that having her son participate in Art Quest changed both of their lives appeared to make an impact on the commissioners.
Let’s hope that these testimonials have an effect on the county budget and its support of the United Arts Council.
